Trivia Question❓

Which canal helped turn Kingston, New York’s Rondout district into a bustling 19th-century waterfront community?

Answer at the bottom of the newsletter

Kingston Bread + Bar brings naturally leavened bread, bagels, pastries, breakfast sandwiches, and lunch to 608 Broadway in Kingston.

Founder Aaron Quint began baking from his Stockade district home in 2017, later growing through a Saturday pop-up at Rough Draft Bar & Books. In February 2020, he partnered with Amanda and Anthony Stromoski to open the business’s first storefront.

The bakery uses organic flour and traditional methods, with breads shaped by hand and fermented for at least 24 hours. Offerings include classic sourdough, caraway rye, olive, and jalapeño cheddar, alongside hand-rolled bagels and rotating pastries.

Visit Wednesday–Monday, 9 a.m.–3 p.m.; closed Tuesday. Catering is also available for gatherings and events.

Q/A Questions

Q: Why does Kingston have both an Uptown and a waterfront downtown?

A: The Stockade district grew around the city’s early colonial settlement, while Rondout developed as a busy port where Rondout Creek meets the Hudson River. Midtown lies between them.

Q: What made Rondout such an important port?

A: It was the eastern end of the Delaware and Hudson Canal. Coal brought through the canal could be transferred to boats bound down the Hudson.

Q: Where can visitors explore that river history today?

A: The Hudson River Maritime Museum, on the Rondout waterfront, tells stories of the boats, industries, and people that shaped the river.

Thinking About Adopting a Pet? Kingston Is Part of a Much Bigger Ulster County Rescue Network

Ulster County has 14 state-listed rescue organizations or municipal shelters, plus additional local adoption groups. Kingston residents have options close to home in Kingston, Bloomington, Highland, Accord, Saugerties and beyond.

For generations, Dietz Stadium has been more than a place to watch a game. It has hosted high school football under Friday night lights, graduations, community gatherings, and semi-professional soccer. But by the late 2010s, its aging infrastructure had fallen behind what a city like Kingston deserved. That changed with a sweeping, multi-phase renovation that concluded in 2025.

Secret Little Hack

Kingston’s “downtown” translation trick

Kingston has two historic hubs that are easy to mix up: Uptown means the Stockade District’s stone houses and old streets, while Downtown means the Rondout waterfront. For a river stroll, navigate to Rondout; for the historic core, navigate to Stockade. Using the neighborhood name instead of “Kingston city center” saves an accidental cross-town detour.

Kingston-area residents have three new options for a fall outing: an Uptown café-and-cocktail lounge and two food businesses along Ulster Avenue. Their documented openings and celebrations fall in September and October 2026.

The Parlour began its soft opening at 1 Main Street during September. Its café-to-cocktails concept includes espresso, food, art, vinyl turntables, and drinks for people who prefer lower-alcohol or alcohol-free choices.

Soho Eatery held a September 25 soft opening. Its deli, market, espresso bar, and hot-and-cold food bars offer a flexible lunch stop, with the food-bar format priced by weight rather than as one fixed plate.

YoYo Chicken celebrated its October 16 grand opening. Chicken sandwiches, wings, burgers, and combination meals give the area another casual meal option; readers should check its current ordering menu for availability.

The geographic distinction matters: The Parlour is in Kingston’s city limits, while Soho and YoYo are in the town of Ulster with Kingston postal addresses. Pick the stop that fits your day, check current hours and ingredients, and do not assume opening-day promotions remain available.

These are three distinct businesses, although the two food stops share the Ulster Avenue corridor. Opening celebrations establish useful milestones, while current business pages supply practical details for planning a visit.
