Trivia Question❓

What ocean-driven phenomenon can make the Hudson River briefly flow northward past Kingston, New York?

Answer at the bottom of the newsletter

Some of Kingston’s most useful shopping spots are easy to miss during a drive down Broadway.

Kingston Meat Market, at 595 Broadway, Kingston, NY 12401, is one of those neighborhood destinations worth getting to know.

Despite its straightforward name, this local shop is more than a traditional butcher counter.

Alongside fresh meats, shoppers can find fish, produce and grocery products reflecting Latin American and Caribbean food traditions.

The store appeals to home cooks seeking specialty cuts, familiar pantry staples and ingredients that may not be easy to locate in a conventional supermarket.

Joke Of The Day

I went to Kingston’s Stockade District to step back in time.

The buildings obliged. The parking app needed an update first.

Midtown Kingston has another reason to be hungry.

Nelly’s Latin Restaurant has opened at 584 Broadway, Kingston, NY 12401, in the former Midtown Deising’s Bakery and Restaurant space.

On a stretch of Broadway known for its mix of neighborhood businesses, Nelly’s brings a menu built around hearty Dominican comfort food.

Diners can explore mofongo, chicharrón de pollo, stewed chicken, rice and beans, roasted chicken, fried pork, seafood and plantains.

One notable breakfast choice is the Dominican-style 3 Golpes, commonly served with mangú, eggs, cheese and salami.

Kingston has never had a festival built from the ground up by the people who actually book the basement shows. That changes on Saturday, November 21, when DIY Kingston and Red Eye Booking stage the first annual DIY Kingston Fest across two venues a single block apart — Keegan Ales at 20 Saint James Street and Night Swim around the corner.

Sixteen Hudson Valley bands fill a 2 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. bill, and the genre range is the point: indie, psych, surf, punk, post-punk, pop, jazz fusion, and world music share the same night. It is a deliberately grassroots operation — founders say every dollar of ticket sales goes directly to the bands, organizers, photographers, sound crew, and door staff.

Interesting Facts

  • A coal port far from the mines: Kingston’s Rondout waterfront was the Hudson River terminus of the Delaware and Hudson Canal, which carried Pennsylvania anthracite toward New York City.

  • Four historic corners: At the intersection of Crown and John streets, 18th-century stone houses stand on all four corners.

  • A lighthouse with predecessors: The Rondout Lighthouse built in 1915 is the third lighthouse to mark the entrance to Rondout Creek.

  • From rides to riverside: Kingston Point Park occupies the site of a former amusement park that visitors could reach by trolley.

Secret Little Hack

Kingston’s five-minute history detour

In Uptown, slip away from the shops on Wall Street to the intersection of John and Crown Streets. Known as the Four Corners, it has an 18th-century stone building on every corner. Walk one slow lap instead of taking a single photo: each crossing gives a fresh view of the facades, turning an ordinary intersection into a tiny architecture tour.

One of Kingston's quietest luxuries is that its farmers market never really stops. When the outdoor season ends each November, the Kingston Farmers Market simply moves inside. For the 2026-2027 season, the Winter Market runs 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. from December through April in Bethany Hall at the Old Dutch Church at 272 Wall Street in Uptown Kingston.

That address matters. Wall Street is the spine of Uptown's historic district, which means market day doubles as an excuse to wander the Stockade area, grab coffee, and browse the shops around the uptown core. It is a rare combination of errand and outing, and it is entirely free to walk through.

More than 100 cats have been rescued from a Catskill, New York, apartment that police described as extremely unsanitary and unsafe for both the animals and the people living there. What began as an investigation into the apartment’s condition became a large-scale rescue, with humane societies, shelters and volunteers helping remove the cats for veterinary care.

Two Catskill residents, Kayla Hackett and Barry Mower, were arrested on animal-related charges and released pending court proceedings. Authorities have condemned the apartment. After veterinary evaluations, the cats are expected to receive temporary housing and continued care through area shelters and rescue groups.
