Trivia Question❓

In the 19th century, Kingston’s Rondout waterfront boomed as the Hudson River terminus of a canal built to carry what Pennsylvania fuel?

Answer at the bottom of the newsletter

The hardest decision at brunch should be sweet or savory. At The Cornell Restaurant + Bar, the buffet gives you a way around that problem: start with breakfast, leave room for lunch, and give yourself enough time to enjoy the waterfront.
Set along Kingston’s Rondout Creek, The Cornell pairs its brunch offering with marina views and a name rooted in the neighborhood’s maritime past. For locals planning a catch-up with friends—or visitors looking for a meal that connects them to Kingston—the setting adds another reason to make the trip downtown.

Kingston has quietly become one of the best live-music cities in the Hudson Valley, and November 2026 shows exactly why. Between the downtown club rooms and the historic Ulster Performing Arts Center, there is a show almost every night of the week — which means locals and visitors alike can plan a full month of concerts without ever driving south to the city.

Kingston’s preliminary parking study paints a mixed picture: spaces are available across much of the city, but the busiest blocks can feel nearly full. In the Rondout waterfront’s core, weekend occupancy reached 85% to 86%, while the North Front Street lot in Uptown hit 90% to 100% at the surveyed afternoon peak.

That lot is central to a debate over Mayor Steve Noble’s proposed mixed-use apartment complex. The Common Council has called for a pause on sales of city-owned parking lots until the study is complete. Consultants expect a final report in summer 2028.

Interesting Facts

  • Four old corners: At the intersection of Crown and John streets, stone buildings dating from before the Revolutionary War stand on all four corners.

  • Two towns, one city: Kingston and the busy canal port of Rondout were separate communities until they merged in 1872 to form today’s city.

  • A coal route to the Hudson: The Delaware and Hudson Canal ended at Rondout, where Pennsylvania coal could be transferred to boats bound down the Hudson River.

  • A constitution’s birthplace: New York’s first state constitution was adopted in Kingston in April 1777, just months before British troops burned much of the settlement.

At 39 Broadway in Kingston, Rosie General, a family-run general store and café on Broadway, has reimagined what a general store can be in the 21st century. This lifestyle shop combines everyday essentials with thoughtful design, creating a shopping experience that proves practical items don't have to be boring.
