16 Bands, Two Rooms, One Night: DIY Kingston Fest Takes Over Midtown |
Kingston's first grassroots music festival packs a reunion, a dream-rock supergroup, and a 9.5-hour marathon into Keegan Ales and Night Swim on Nov. 21. |
Kingston has never had a festival built from the ground up by the people who actually book the basement shows. That changes on Saturday, November 21, when DIY Kingston and Red Eye Booking stage the first annual DIY Kingston Fest across two venues a single block apart — Keegan Ales at 20 Saint James Street and Night Swim around the corner.
Sixteen Hudson Valley bands fill a 2 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. bill, and the genre range is the point: indie, psych, surf, punk, post-punk, pop, jazz fusion, and world music share the same night. It is a deliberately grassroots operation — founders say every dollar of ticket sales goes directly to the bands, organizers, photographers, sound crew, and door staff.
What you need to know before you go
Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. To skip online fees, organizers accept Zelle at 239-823-8464 (include your name so it can be checked off at the door) or Venmo (add an emoji to the payment note), and cash is welcome at the entry. The event is hosted at Keegan Ales, the Saint James Street brewery and restaurant famous for its Mother's Milk stout. Eventbrite sales are refundable up to seven days before the show. Perhaps most important: exact set times and the split of which bands play which room have not been announced yet — the organizers say they will post schedules as the date approaches, so follow the fest before you plan your arrival.
The band behind the reunion
The headline draw is a rare one. Grampfather, the Kingston indie-psych band whose records run from the thrashy to the chill, is playing a reunion show. The group — James Kwapisz (vocals, guitar, synth), Andrew Blot (guitar, keys), Matt Joyce (bass), and Tony DiMauro (drums) — built a deep catalog of wry, genre-hopping Kingston rock, and Kwapisz is also the organizer behind DIY Kingston itself. A closing-night reunion set from a band that helped shape the local scene is the kind of thing that does not come around often.
Local favorites and a dream-rock collective
Several acts on the bill are Kingston fixtures. Hush Woods, formed from members of the Pleasers, crafts lush, dreamy indie rock and released the richly arranged album Cardinal in August 2026. King in Yellow describes its sound as "heavy jangle for a world with nothing to celebrate," and Tiny Blue Ghost calls its work "dream rock created by your friendly neighborhood ghosts."
Look for loud-and-fast turns from TV Sleep and Kissing Well; melodic pop-punk from Stone Ridge's Ramona Lane; jam-fusion improv from Accord's Pour La Terre; the Woodstock indie of Your Favorite Person; and the Albany dream-pop of Stella & The Reptilians. Also on the bill: Jelly Kelly, Killer Film, A Whole Nother, Atabeya, Couch Surfer, and Syncope.
Keegan Ales' other late-November dates
If you cannot make the fest, Keegan's standing weekly calendar keeps running. Trivia Break Tuesdays with Andre starts at 6:30 p.m. with free admission, and Keegan Army's Sunday 5K fun run steps off at 11 a.m., also free. The kitchen is open throughout, and the bar runs Tuesday–Thursday 4–10 p.m., Friday and Saturday noon–10 p.m., and Sunday noon–7 p.m.
For a scene that has spent years building itself show by show, a nine-and-a-half-hour festival under one Kingston roof is a milestone worth showing up for. Buy early, bring cash, and check the organizers' Instagram for set times.

The lineup sounds good, especially Hush Woods and King in Yellow. I’d like to know which bands are at Keegan Ales and which are at Night Swim before buying a ticket, though. With sets running from 2 until 11:30, most people will need to pick a window rather than stay all day. Hope they post the schedule soon, because I’d hate to get there right after the band I came for.
Ben WalkerSame here. I can only make the evening, so even a rough set order would help me decide when to head over.
I saw Grampfather play a small Kingston show years ago and figured I had missed my chance to hear them again. A reunion set is enough to get me out, but I like that the ticket money goes to the bands and crew too. I’ll probably show up early and catch some names I don’t know. Sixteen bands in one day is a lot, in a good way.
