Uptown Kingston Gallery Walk: The First-Saturday Art Crawl You Won't Want to Miss |

There's something almost surreal about walking through the Stockade District on the first Saturday of the month. You're standing in front of buildings that survived being burned to the ground by the British in 1777 — thick limestone walls that have watched over nearly 250 years of history — and now those same walls hold paintings, photographs, sculptures, and installations that feel like they're having a conversation with the past.
The Uptown Kingston Gallery Walk isn't a massive, institutional art fair. It's quieter than that. More personal. The first Saturday of every month, galleries in the Stockade District open their doors — some in former banks, some in converted row houses, some in spaces that still smell like old wood and history — and you wander from one to the next.
You'll find oil paintings next to ceramics, black-and-white photography hanging beside mixed-media collage work. Every artist seems to have a story, and most of them are standing right there, happy to explain how they ended up in Kingston, what drew them to this particular corner of the Hudson Valley.
The walk is free. There's usually wine or cider flowing. You'll meet painters who left Manhattan studios because they needed more space for the light to do what they wanted. You'll encounter a ceramicist who drives two hours from Brooklyn every weekend because Kingston's clay feels different to them.
By the time you reach the Old Dutch Church at the corner of North Front Street, the sun's probably dipping below the Shawangunks, and you're standing in front of a 330-year-old building thinking about what else in the world feels this alive. |

Free and there's wine? Why did nobody tell me about this sooner. I've lived twenty minutes from Kingston for six years.
The ceramicist who drives from Brooklyn every weekend — I think I know who that is. Spoke to her last spring outside the old bank space. She said Kingston clay has a different weight to it. Thought she was being a little precious about it at the time but honestly I kind of get it now.
Been doing this walk for three years now and every single time I find something that stops me cold. Last month it was a small oil painting tucked in the back of that converted row house on Wall Street. Didn't even catch the artist's name. Still thinking about it.
