Guardians of Kingston's Past
The Friends of Historic Kingston (FHK) is a nonprofit preservation organization founded in 1965 to protect and promote the architectural, historical, and cultural heritage of Kingston. As New York's first capital and a city with roots stretching back to 1652, Kingston has a rich built environment — and FHK works to ensure that history isn't lost to demolition or neglect.
The organization advocates for the preservation of historic structures across all three of Kingston's neighborhoods — Uptown's Stockade District, the Rondout's maritime architecture, and Midtown's Victorian homes. They've been instrumental in fighting inappropriate development, securing landmark designations, and connecting property owners with preservation resources.
Education and Advocacy
FHK hosts lectures, walking tours, and house tours that bring Kingston's history to life. Their annual events — including the Holiday House Tour and the Kingston Stockade Festival — draw hundreds of visitors and raise awareness about the city's unique architectural heritage.
Programs include: Historic preservation advocacy, walking tours, house tours, lecture series, educational programs, landmark designation support, and community events celebrating Kingston's heritage.
Why Preservation Matters
Historic preservation isn't about freezing a city in time — it's about ensuring that new growth respects and builds on what came before. The Friends of Historic Kingston help property owners navigate the complexities of renovating historic buildings, connect them with tax credits and grants, and advocate for policies that protect the character that makes Kingston special. It's about honoring the past while building a vibrant future.

I appreciate what they do but I wish more people knew about the tax credits piece. My neighbor had no idea there were grants available when he was renovating his place on Cornell Street and ended up doing work that wasn't up to the historic standards. FHK could probably do more outreach in Midtown specifically.
mike_rondoutThis is such a good point. A lot of people don't even know FHK exists until they're already deep into a renovation. I found out about the tax credits way too late when we were doing work on our place on Wall Street. Honestly they should do a simple flyer drop in Midtown neighborhoods, something super basic just to get the word out.
Took the Holiday House Tour a couple years back and it was genuinely one of the best things I've done in Kingston. The Stockade District houses alone are worth it. Glad FHK is still out there fighting the good fight because some of the development proposals I've seen floated around Uptown lately are pretty alarming.
