A Journey Through Revolutionary War History
The Senate House itself is one of New York State's most significant historical landmarks. Built in the 1670s by Dutch settler Wessel Wessels Ten Broeck, this stone house served as the first capitol of New York State in 1777, where the state's first legislature convened after the adoption of the New York State Constitution. The building witnessed the birth of New York State government during the Revolutionary War.
The Autumnfest celebrates this rich history by recreating the atmosphere of 18th-century colonial life. Visitors will encounter reenactors portraying soldiers, craftsmen, merchants, and everyday citizens from the Revolutionary War period. The event features authentic military demonstrations by the 2nd New York Regiment and other historical units, showcasing the drills, tactics, and daily life of Continental Army soldiers.
Colonial Crafts and Demonstrations
One of the highlights of Autumnfest is the extensive lineup of colonial craft demonstrations. Skilled artisans will showcase traditional 18th-century trades and crafts, many of which are rarely seen today. Visitors can watch blacksmiths forge iron tools, weavers work at their looms, and coopers craft wooden barrels using traditional methods.
The event features open-hearth cooking demonstrations where interpreters prepare period-appropriate meals using authentic 18th-century recipes and techniques. You'll learn how colonial families preserved food for winter, baked bread in Dutch ovens, and made do with the ingredients available in the Hudson Valley during autumn.
Other craft demonstrations include candle dipping, tinsmithing, woodworking, and textile work. Many artisans allow visitors to try their hand at these traditional skills, making it an educational and hands-on experience for families and history enthusiasts alike.
Military Demonstrations and Encampments
Several Revolutionary War military units will set up authentic period encampments on the Senate House grounds. These encampments showcase the living conditions, equipment, and daily routines of soldiers from both the Continental Army and British forces. Reenactors wear period-correct uniforms and use authentic replica weapons and equipment.
Scheduled military demonstrations include musket firing drills, bayonet exercises, and tactical maneuvers. Interpreters explain the weapons, tactics, and daily life of 18th-century soldiers, answering questions from visitors and providing insight into the military experience during America's fight for independence.
The event also features presentations on the role of Ulster County in the Revolutionary War, including the burning of Kingston by British forces in October 1777 and the subsequent rebuilding of the city.
Family-Friendly Activities
Autumnfest is designed to be engaging for visitors of all ages. Children can participate in 18th-century games and activities, including hoop-and-stick games, marbles, and other period amusements. The event provides a rare opportunity for kids to experience history in an interactive, hands-on way rather than through textbooks or museum displays.
Guided tours of the Senate House run throughout the day, offering deeper insights into the building's history and its role in New York State's founding. Knowledgeable interpreters share stories of the people who lived and worked in the house over its 350-year history.
Food vendors offer both period-inspired treats and modern concessions, ensuring that visitors can enjoy refreshments while exploring the event.

The Senate House State Historic Site is located in Kingston's Uptown Stockade District, easily accessible from the New York State Thruway (Exit 19) and other major routes. Limited parking is available on-site, with additional parking at nearby lots and street parking throughout the Stockade District.

Parking up on Fair Street is always a headache during busy weekends so just a heads up to anyone driving in, the lots off North Front fill up fast. Get there early or plan on a little walk. The event itself is worth it though, the musket firing demo is loud but the kids love it.
Mike DelgadoGood tip about North Front. We usually just park over by the Tech City area and walk up, takes maybe 10 minutes and you skip the whole lot situation. And yes, every year my son covers his ears but then immediately asks when they're doing it again lol.
Took my grandkids to this a couple years back and the open-hearth cooking demo was the part they talked about the whole drive home. The woman making bread in the Dutch oven let them touch the dough and everything. Eight dollars for adults is a pretty good deal for a full day out honestly.
