Kingston Hosts ADU Expo to Help Homeowners Navigate Accessory Dwelling Units |
Kingston is tackling its affordable housing crisis head-on.
On April 10, the city hosts its first-ever Accessory Dwelling Unit Expo at the Andy Murphy Neighborhood Center, bringing together builders, designers, and lenders to help homeowners explore backyard apartments and tiny homes.
The free event runs from 10 AM to 4 PM and features over 25 vendors offering information on everything from design and construction to financing and zoning.
What Is an ADU
An Accessory Dwelling Unit is essentially a second small home on your property.
Think backyard cottages, garage apartments, basement units, or tiny homes in your side yard.
These self-contained living spaces have kitchens, bathrooms, and separate entrances, making them perfect for aging parents, adult children, or rental income.
And they are one of the fastest ways to add affordable housing without massive development projects.
The Plus One Program
The expo is part of Kingstons Plus One initiative, which helps homeowners navigate the process of building ADUs on their properties.
The program includes tax exemptions for homeowners who create these units, meaning you can add rental income to your property while helping solve the housing shortage.
The city also offers permit-ready plans and streamlined approvals to make the process easier.
Mayor Steve Noble says ADUs are a key part of the citys housing strategy.
We cannot solve the housing crisis with apartment buildings alone, Noble said.
ADUs let homeowners be part of the solution.
Whether you are curious about adding a granny flat for aging parents or want to build a rental unit for extra income, this expo has answers. |
