Volunteers Needed for Annual Rondout Creek Cleanup Along Kingston Waterfront

The annual Rondout Creek cleanup seeks volunteers to help remove trash and debris from the waterway that runs through the heart of Kingston.

The Rondout Creek is getting some much-needed attention this spring.

Volunteers are invited to participate in the annual Rondout Creek cleanup, an event that brings together community members to remove trash and debris from the waterway that runs through the heart of Kingston.

The cleanup, organized by the Hudson River Maritime Museum and the City of Kingston, takes place Saturday morning along various points of the creek from the Rondout neighborhood to Eddyville.

Event Details

Volunteers will meet at 9 AM at the museum dock on East Strand Street in Rondout before dispersing to assigned cleanup sites.

The event covers several miles of shoreline, with teams working in different sections to maximize coverage.

Organizers provide all necessary equipment, including gloves, trash bags, safety vests, and grabbers for picking up debris.

Participants should wear sturdy shoes that can get wet and bring water to stay hydrated.

Why It Matters

Last year, more than 100 volunteers removed over two tons of trash from the creek, including plastic bottles, tires, shopping carts, and other debris that had accumulated over the winter.

The cleanup is part of a broader effort to improve water quality in the Rondout Creek, which flows into the Hudson River near the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge.

Environmental groups monitor the creek throughout the year, tracking wildlife populations and water quality indicators.

The annual cleanup makes a visible difference in the health of the waterway and the surrounding ecosystem.

Volunteers of all ages are welcome, with special assignments available for families with children.

Registration is encouraged but not required. For more information, contact the Hudson River Maritime Museum on East Strand Street.
