New Bike Trail Extension Connects Kingston to Hurley Through Scenic Route |
Cyclists can now ride from Kingston to Hurley on a new paved trail extension that follows the old rail line through Ulster County countryside. |
Cyclists in Kingston have a new way to explore the Hudson Valley.
A three-mile extension of the Kingston-Hurley Rail Trail opened this week, connecting the city to the historic hamlet of Hurley via a scenic paved path that follows the old Ulster and Delaware Railroad corridor.
The new section begins at the trailhead near Dietz Stadium on Broadway and winds through wooded areas and open fields before reaching Hurley.
Trail Features
The paved trail is open to cyclists, runners, walkers, and anyone looking for a car-free route through the countryside.
Benches along the route provide rest stops with views of the surrounding landscape, while bike racks at key points allow riders to secure their bicycles while exploring.
The trail surface is smooth and well-maintained, suitable for road bikes, mountain bikes, and even strollers.
Signage along the route indicates mileage and points of interest, including historic markers about the railroad that once operated on the corridor.
Part of a Larger Vision
The extension is part of a larger plan to create a continuous bike path from Kingston to the Ashokan Reservoir.
When complete, the trail will give residents car-free access to some of the most beautiful scenery in the Catskills.
The project is funded through a combination of state grants and local contributions, with support from the Ulster County Rail Trail Advisory Committee.
Local cycling enthusiasts have been advocating for this extension for years, and the opening marks a major milestone for outdoor recreation in the area.
The trail is accessible from dawn to dusk year-round, though users should exercise caution during winter months when ice may be present. |
